Shiatsu is a formm of body work, at its highest level. It combines a finely-tuned intuition with a thorough understanding of the body and mind. It was developed in Japan ; a complet system of healing through the touch of the acupressure points with the fingers. Shiatsu involves stretching, holding, and leaning ones body's weight into various places on the receivers body to improve the energy and blood circulation, as well as the body's posture and flexibility. Pressure is applied through the hands, knees, feet, fingers and forearms while the receiver is lying down or sitting. The treatment is focused along certain channels of energy in the body (Meridians) called Ki. Ki is the life force which sustains the body, the mind and the spirits energy and activity.

It is also possible to apply Shiatsu to ones self. It is used to treat internal malfunctionments, promote and maintain a healthy body and spirit, as well as treat specific illnesses. Shiatsu depends on the attitude and concentration of the masseur rather than on a particular style or skill.
